The Hoover Dam is a marvel of depression-era civil engineering and spans the Colorado River at Black Canyon, the border between Nevada and Arizona. It was completed in 1936, and provides power to Nevada, California, and Arizona. After getting our passes, she grabs Thomas’s arm and drags him to where the tour begins, leaving me to trail along after them like a third wheel—a third wheel who’s losing her patience. Our tour consists of ten, all tourists except for Thomas and me. Instead of listening to our guide, the very chipper Joan, Natasha chooses to whisper to Thomas the entire time and have him tell her about the dam, in “clear English unlike Joan, who speaks gibberish.” Thomas is letting her lead, ignoring me to focus his attention on her tour of the dam. He’s been there several times, and although no expert, is able to explain the construction details and modern function of the dam in ways that Natasha understands. To my dismay, she dotes on him, rubs his arm, and gushes far too much about how “smarty trousers” he is. At one point, she walks off to look at a large turbine and I drag Thomas into a corner. In a pout, I complain to him about her. “She’s totally trying to make me jealous, why are you letting her?” His eyebrows rise in confusion. “I don’t think she has any sense of making anyone jealous. I think she wants to see this dam, and I’m providing her the personal, watered down guidance she needs. You told me to be nicer to her.” She returns and drags Thomas off by the hand to go over another exhibit with her.
